Every Christians or anyone around the world who reads the Holy Bible already knew about Noah and his Ark that was written in the Old Testament. Today, Hollywood movie-makers had featured the story of Noah on digital screen enhanced with some awesome animations.
Speaking about animations and in relation to the topic on this post, the watchers were cleverly animated by the film makers. But, the questions here are:
What are they?
Are they the Nephilims?
And why are they portrayed as giant rock monsters?
The Nephilims were first mentioned on Genesis 6:1-4 wherein they were referred as giants or sons of the fallen angels.
In the film's view of the Nephilims, they were a group of angels who feel pity of Adam and Eve when they committed their first sin from eating the forbidden fruit. These angels rushed into the earth to aid Adam but they were punished by God turning them into giant rock monsters. They were then referred as Nephilim ( although this word wasn't used in the movie) or giants.
When God created man, some of the angels committed their sins when they were attracted by the beauty of the humans. Thus, some of them came down to earth and mated with the humans bearing demi-angelic beings as their offspring. They even possess magical powers and in most cases, had giant sizes.
Either good or bad angels were referred as "The Watchers" but they differ in purpose. Good angels simply guide man into righteousness but the bad angels lead them into their destruction.
Bad Watchers were known to be the one responsible in revealing the secrets of technology. For men, they introduced weapons such as swords, shields and breastplates. For women, they introduced luxuries such as makeup, precious jewelries and expensive clothing.
The film had depicted the Watchers as angels in the form of light that fell down from the heavens and landed on the surface of the Earth. They were actually punished by God for their disobedience. As a result, their bodies which was in the form of light had merged with the earth where they end up as giant rock beings.
They were also the one who helped Noah in building the large Ark. But the most interesting part of the film, the Watchers were taken back by God into the heavens when they defended Noah against Tubal-Cain's army.
Personal Opinion About The Watchers
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they were punished to live by working on their own effort which mean that they had to sweat for every food that they had to eat. It was due to this reason why the Watchers came down to earth to help them by introducing technological knowledge.
You might ask, why did God punished them since they only intend to provide help to all mankind?
Introducing technological knowledge had benefited humanity at some point. However, these knowledge were turned by bad men into evil purposes such as the corrupt civilization of Cain's descendant. They used such kind of technologies to destroy their brothers and claim to be the king or superior to God. As a result, the Watchers then realized their "misguided compassion" to mankind.
However, basing from the traditional Judeo-Christian idea, misguided compassion wasn't the actual reason but "envy to mankind". A fallen angel commonly referred as "Satan" had motivated Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit. Although, there seems to be no link between the Watchers in Noah and the evil serpent in the garden of Eden.
When the movie was released, it has drawn a growing number of curious audiences who wanted to confirm if the film had accurately portrayed what was written in the Holy Bible.
Are you one of these curious individuals?
If you are one of them then the answer is "No". Here are some of the inaccuracies of the movie:
1. Too much violence involved
- Noah was not a warrior which contradicts what was portrayed in the film. The Bible in fact never mentioned any fighting involved. But in the film, Noah had fought almost every intruders (descendant of Cain) from getting into his huge Ark.
2. Watchers helped Noah in building the huge Ark
- In the Holy Bible, Noah built his huge Ark without the help of the Watchers as opposed to what has been portrayed in the film.
3. Sinners lead by Tubal-Cain had aggressively attacked Noah's Ark
- Based from the Bible, Noah had even warned every people around about the flood and asked them to help him in building the large Ark. However, they never believed Noah that they end up making fun of him. There was no Tubal-Cain leading his army in attempt to confiscate the Ark.
4. The rush
- In the movie, the sign that the flood was about to come started when rain begins to fall. Ham was still outside wherein his concerned father rushes into the forest in search of his son. They made it back but they had to fight their way into the Ark.
In the Bible, Noah and his family had already secured themselves inside the Ark before the rain even started to fall.
5. Adam and Eve had only three sons
- In Genesis 5:4, it was mentioned that Adam and Eve had Cain, Abel and Seth as their sons. But, other than them, are also other unnamed sons and daughters.
6. Lamech, Noah's father Died when he was a young boy
- Noah's father Lamech didn't died when he was still a young boy. Lamech actually died just five years before the flood had occurred.
7. Japheth was the youngest son of Noah
- Genesis 9:24 stated that Ham was the youngest son of Noah.
8. Japheth was the one who released the raven from the Ark
- Genesis 9:7 stated that Noah was the one who released the raven.
9. Mankind was being punished because of what they have done to earth
- The Bible stated that man has been judged because of the sins that they had committed against God.
10. Only animals will survive and humanity will be lost
- Genesis 6:19-20 talks about the preservation of animals of different kinds. And on Hebrews 11:7, it talks about Noah's household as the righteous heir of the new world which was opposed to the film.
11. Noah's characterization was murderous
- In the early part of the film, Noah won't hesitate to murder the three men who were hunting the animal that got severely wounded. Noah also did not help the young woman whom Ham tried to take along with him into the Ark. And worst, he threaten to kill the offspring of his daughter-in-law if she gave birth to a girl.
The movie merely shows Noah's obsession in ensuring that mankind will no longer exist in the new world. His only greatest concern was the safety and preservation of all the animals.
These are just some misrepresentation of Noah portrayed in the film. You might have noticed more but above all, we have to conclude that the Noah from the Bible is not the Noah that has been portrayed in the movie. This is actually a form of blasphemy against God and His chosen servant Noah.
As for the Watchers, they were the most strangest part of the film because they don't correspond to the Biblical images of angels.
